South Africa have shown vast reserves of patience as skipper Hashim Amla and swashbuckling batsman AB de Villiers showed their skills of blocking and helped their side to delay India's win at stumps on Day four of the final Test here at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground on Sunday.
Chasing a massive target of 481, the visitors lost both openers Dean Elgar (4) and Temba Bavuma (34) at the hands of ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
At the end of play, South Africa were 72-2, with Amla (unbeaten at 23) and De Villiers (unbeaten at 11) providing resistance to the visitors.
Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane had scored his second consecutive century to help India declare their second innings score at 267-5.
Although Test skipper Virat Kohli failed to score century, he contributed with a significant 88.
Rahane, who has scored 127 and unbeaten 100 in this Test, became the fifth Indian batsman to score twin centuries in a Test match.
For the visitors, Morne Morkel bagged three wickets while Kyle Abbott and Imran Tahir chipped in with a wicket each.
India have already clinched the four-match series 2-0 following their 124 win over South Africa in Nagpur.
