The Trinamool Congress on Monday condemned yesterday's assault on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee as a disgrace not only to politics but also to the nation.
"Yesterday's nasty incident was a disgrace not only to politics but also to the nation," TMC spokesperson Derek O'Brien said at a press conference here.
Earlier today, the labour wing of the Trinamool Congress, the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), staged a protest against the assault on Abhishek.
The protestors chanted slogans, and held the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responsible for the attack.
Banerjee, who is the president of the youth wing of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was slapped by a youth on Sunday while addressing a rally in East Midnapore District.
