A controversial documentary "India's Daughter" based on the gang-rape of a young woman in Delhi has been aired by the BBC despite protest from the Indian government.

According to the Guardian, Delhi refused to allow the documentary to be shown in India as the film-makers did not seek their approval.

A BBC spokesman said, defending the broadcast, that the documentary provided a "revealing insight" into the brutal crime that led to protests across India and sent shock waves around the world demanding changes in the attitudes towards women.

Mukesh Singh, who drove the bus on which the woman was raped, comes across in the film as unapologetic for his crime.

Mukesh says in the movie that a "decent girl will not roam around at nine o'clock at night".

He also says that a girl is more responsible for rape as compared to a boy.
