Brazil World Cup host city may 'drop out' if 'key legislation' not approved soon

The mayor of the city of Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, which is a venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has admitted that his city may drop out from the World Cup roster if key legislation is not approved soon.

Although the World Cup starts on June 12 but some cities are behind schedule, with Porto Alegre's Beira Rio stadium, which is due to host five matches, still needing temporary structures to house the media, sponsors and other requirements by FIFA.

According to the BBC, Mayor Jose Fortunati said that there was no 'plan B' to find the extremely necessary extra funding, adding that a bill creating tax breaks for companies investing in temporary structures for the tournament must be voted on Tuesday.

Fortunati however, said that he is more worried about the temporary structures, adding that if the project is not voted then the city cannot host World Cup matches at Porto Alegre.

The report mentioned that the legislation allows tax exemptions to firms that invest in the structures as the authorities are not allowed to use public money in structures that will not be used after the World Cup.
