California Walnut Commission (CWC) hosted a one-day Scientific and Health Research Meeting in New Delhi today to discuss the role of walnuts in disease prevention and maintenance.

The day long interactive program witnessed renowned researchers and medical professionals who participated in sessions on general nutrition and dietary recommendations, cardiovascular health, Alzheimer's disease, cognitive health and diabetes.

These sessions provided updates on existing health and nutrition projects with some specific insights about the CWC health research program.

The event also saw the presence of international researchers who talked about their area of study on walnuts namely:

-Dr. Lenore Arab, MSc, PhD on association between walnut consumption and diabetes risk

-Dr. Abha Chauhan, PhD on beneficial effects of a diet with walnuts in Alzheimer disease

-Dr. Emilio Ros, MD, PhD on new advancements with the Mediterranean diet & Walnuts and Healthy Aging

The CWC has been actively highlighting walnuts to Indian consumers through marketing activities that promote walnuts California origin, quality, taste and positive health benefits. These health benefits have been demonstrated through 180 plus papers published since early 1990's when the Commission actively began assessing the role of walnuts in diet and effect on chronic disease prevention. Research findings have shown the positive outcomes of walnuts in health issues such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diseases of aging and diabetes.

Commenting on the success of the meeting, Michelle McNeil Connelly, CEO of the California Walnut Commission said, "This Scientific and Health Research Meeting was an exceptional platform to discuss the state of health in India, dietary patterns, chronic health conditions and promotion of healthy lifestyles. We hope that this meeting provides an opportunity to maintain a network of researchers and medical professionals who may contribute to walnut-specific health research in India."

Also present as one of the key speakers, Dr. H.K. Chopra, President of the Cardiological Society of India, said, "I am glad to be a part of such a prestigious symposium where the presenters and program planning committee had the opportunity to learn more about the California Walnut Commission's scientific research program and discuss topical issues that promote health and quality of life. The meeting has definitely set the momentum to explore new areas of study, discuss health concerns, and the role walnuts can play in a healthy lifestyle with in the Indian population. Walnuts are the only tree nut to contain a significant amount of the plant-based omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid, required by the human body. A handful of walnuts also offers four grams of protein, two grams of fiber, and is a good source of magnesium (10 percent DV). With a variety of nutrients and a flavor profile that pairs well with an array of seasonal foods, they are an ideal ingredient any time of the year.
