China has repeated a call on the Dalai Lama that the significant practice of reincarnation should be respected following the Buddhist spiritual leader's interview where he had said that he did not require a successor.
The Dalai Lama had earlier said that he might be the last leader of the Buddhist institute and that Tibetan Buddhism did not depend on an individual.
According to the China Daily, the Dalai Lama was previously told that he did not have a right to abandon the historic tradition of reincarnation.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that China had fixed historic customs and religious procedures.
Hua said that China follows a policy of freedom of belief and religion that includes the passing of the Buddhist tradition.
