Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday said that she chose to remain unmarried to serve people from the weaker sections of society, and therefore, nobody could accuse her of nepotism. .

"I knew that women politicians face a lot of problems in their lives, so, I dedicated my life for the weaker communities, stayed unmarried. When I decided to come into politics, the one thing that I had in my mind was to help the weaker sections," Mayawati told ANI in an interview.

"Therefore, nobody should accuse me of nepotism. I stayed away from family life and stayed fixated on getting rights for the backward castes," she added.

"This is why I could never have a family, as it brings added responsibilities, and people start accusing them of giving more importance or focus on their families. I did not want to hear that from people," she said.

The BSP chief also added that if her party's primary agenda of helping the weaker sections would have got diluted, the base vote of the party would have been affected by the Modi wave, which, however, did not happen.

"If our party's primary agenda, which is of supporting the backward classes, would have wavered or got diluted, our base vote would have been affected due to the Modi wave, but that did not happen," said Mayawati.

"If the leaders of backward castes had done something for the community, then there would have been no need for the BSP. They didn't, so we exist," she added.
