South Africa coach Russell Domingo has defended the selection of pace bowler Vernon Philander instead of fully-fit Kyle Abbott despite their World Cup semifinal defeat to New Zealand on Tuesday.

Abbott delivered an impressive bowling spell, claiming one wicket for 27 runs off a tight six overs during South Africa's quarterfinal win over Sri Lanka.

However, Abott was sidelined to make way for Philander, who was smacked for 14 runs by Brendon McCullum in his first over and appeared to be unfit during the semifinal tie on Tuesday.

Describing Vernon as 'one hell of a good bowler', Domingo said that it was unfair to lay the blame on him, or any other bowler, insisting that he has done a lot of good for them over a long period, Sport24 reported.

Claiming that Vernon didn't bowl too badly, Domingo said that one needs a bit of luck to win a tournament like this, adding that they showed character especially the manner in which they batted against an excellent bowling line-up and in difficult conditions.
