Congress leader Shobha Oza on Wednesday termed as unfortunate the incident of a woman being raped in Meghalaya by suspected militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Front.
"What happened in Meghalaya is an unfortunate incident, and it should be condemned in no uncertain terms. Somewhere, there are lapses on the part of law and order. These incidents show that neither the state government nor the central government is sensitive to cases of rape that are taking place," she said.
"There is no fear of the law among the culprits, as they are sanguine that they can attack women and get away with it.That's why the crime graph against women is increasing," she added.
Suspected militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Front allegedly shot dead a woman after she resisted their attempts to molest her.
According to reports, the victim was fired at point blank range by the militants on Tuesday while her family was forcibly locked up in their house in South Garo Hills.
The brutal incident comes close on the heels of the murder and gangrape of two teenage girls in Uttar Pradesh' Badaun.
Another incident of a woman being raped in Bareilly and forced to drink acid was also reported from Bareilly. The crimes have drawn sharp reactions from various women activists and politicians.
