Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Wednesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government's silence over Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj's remark that all Hindu women must produce at least four children, and asked whether India's population policy has undergone a change.
"Is the Indian population policy being changed? Why has the Prime Minister maintained silence even for 24 hours? Why has the home minister, the party president, the finance minister maintained silence on this issue? Is this the new population policy of India?" asked Singhvi.
"The country wants to know, the nation wants an answer. We are waiting for an answer. We are, however, confident that no answer will be come," he added.
Address a gathering on the occasion of Sant Samaagam Mahotsava in Meerut earlier on Tuesday, Sakshi Maharaj had said the concept of four wives and 40 children will not work in India and added that the time has come when a Hindu woman must produce at least four children in order to protect Hindu religion.
The BJP MP, who was earlier at the centre of a controversy when he described Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse as a 'patriot', emphasized that it is necessary for Hindus to increase their progeny to protect the religion.
