The Congress Party on Monday alleged that Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal's demand of a Greece-style referendum for full statehood for Delhi is an attempt to divert the people's attention from the main subject of development.
"I think it is a strange demand. I think he (Kejriwal) is trying to divert people's attention. Already, issues with regard to electricity and water have come as a huge problem. No development is taking place. Social welfare schemes have not been implemented. They (AAP) had promised of installing CCTVs. What has happened to that issue? Where are the Home Guards?... So, I think it is only a way of diverting the people's minds from the main subject of development," Congress leader J. P. Agarwal told ANI here.
"Referendum is not needed. You (Kejriwal) had won because of your promise for full statehood to Delhi... This was also the demand of both the Congress and BJP," he added.
Kejriwal has reportedly written to Delhi's Urban Development Department to explore how a Greece-style referendum can be held in the national capital on the issue of full statehood.
