Many of the children who died as the South Korean ferry capsized broke their fingers because they were desperately trying to escape.

Thousands of mourners paid tearful respects at a temporary memorial to the hundreds of student victims of South Korea's ferry disaster.

The confirmed death toll now stands at almost 160, with 140 still unaccounted for.

According to news.com.au, divers had located bodies with broken fingers.

Nearly 280 students are among the dead and missing.
