The counting of votes started for the Bandra East and Dhuri by-elections amid tight security here on Wednesday.
Voting for electing a new representative for Bandra East has been necessitated because of the death of Shiv Sena MLA Bala Sawant.
Former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane from the Congress, Trupti Sawant from the Shiv Sena and Siraj Khan from the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen are contesting for the seat.
Counting also began for the Dhuri assembly seat at 8 a.m. at the Desh Bhagat College in Bardwal.
Twelve candidates are contesting for the seat with the main fight being between Akali-BJP candidate Gobind Singh Longowal and Congress-backed Sanjha Morcha contestant Simar Pratap Singh Barnala, grandson of former Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala.
The results are expected to be announced by this afternoon.
