In a shocking incident of caste discrimination, a Dalit groom in Haryana's Kurukshetra district has been allegedly stopped from riding a horse cart in his wedding ceremony by the upper caste people.

It is reported that the mob not only stopped the Dalit groom, Sandeep, from riding a horse-drawn carriage during his marriage procession but also pelted stones at his family members and the police.

The incident took place on Saturday.

"I don't know those people. We had to go in Guducherry village and if they were stopping us then they must be from our village. I was told that I am a Dalit and hence have 'no right to ride a horse or a horse cart'," Sandeep told ANI.

"They threatened us saying that if I tried to do so then the situation will turn even more violent. They misbehaved with our women and abused them. They didn't even allow us to enter the temple. They even started pelting stones at us," he added.

Sandeep said that his family called the police following the incident, adding the entire wedding procession took place in their presence.

Meanwhile, Naib Tehsildar Chetna Choudhary said that there was an issue initially but they helped the groom complete the rituals.

"Everything is under control. Police is also deployed there all the time," said Choudhary.

As per reports, the police have registered a case against 21 people under relevant Sections of SC/ST Act.

No arrests have been made yet.
