Dallas police officer charged for killing unarmed neighbour

A police officer in Dallas was charged with manslaughter days after she allegedly shot a man.

"The grand jury will be that entity that will make the final decision in terms of the charge or charges that will come out of this case," CNN reported Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson as saying .

"We prepare to present a thorough case to the grand jury of Dallas County, so that the right decision can be made in this case," he added.

The police officer Amber Guyger who is a four-year veteran at the Dallas Police shot Botham Shem Jean, 26.

Guyger was off-duty when the incident took place. The victim who was unarmed died at a local hospital.

Guyger told the police that she thought she was entering her own apartment but was on the wrong floor. Upon encountering the victim, she thought her home was being robbed and opened fire, CNN quoted police.

Guyger was initially released from prison on Saturday after signing a USD 300,000 bond.

However, Jean was not the first person shot by Guyger as the latter was involved into another shooting in 2017 while she was on duty. She was not charged back then, CNN reported.

According to CNN, the Dallas police has handed over the matter to the Texas Rangers, the state enforcement agency.

"At the very early stages of this investigation -- initial indications were that they were what we consider circumstances of an officer-involved shooting," CNN quoted the Dallas Police.

"However, as we continued this investigation it became clear that we were dealing with what appears to be a much different and very unique situation," it further added.

According to reports, the police has also obtained blood sample from Guyger to test for drugs and alcohol.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings took on Twitter to thank both the state investigative agency and the Dallas Police for their prompt action.

He released a statement saying, "I want to thank the Texas Rangers for thoroughly investigating this tragic case from the moment the Dallas Police Department requested that they take over on Friday morning."

"Please continue to pray for the family of Botham Jean tonight and in the weeks and months ahead," he added.
