Following Sam Smith's public apology for mistakenly suggesting that he was the first openly gay man to accept an Academy Awards; Dustin Lance Black had some lovely words for the Oscar-winning singer.
"@SamSmith Congratulations. Drink water. Rest. But do check out some of the other Gay Oscar work out there. Some truly wonderful stuff," Black wrote, reports E! Online.
"This has proven to be a lively day on Twitter. From humor to anger. The former my intent... in defense of history. Much love to all," he added.
Black had one final note to his Twitter followers to clear the air once and for all: "Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh."
Smith was riding high after winning the gong for 'Best Original Song' at the Academy Awards, but the celebrations no doubt come to a crashing halt after the 41-year-old screen writer took exception to the 23-year-old singer on Twitter.
Black, also openly gay who won 'Best Original Screenplay' in 2009 for 'Milk' tweeted, "Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiance."
But after many thought the screenplay writer for 'Virginia' was taking a shot at the 'Nirvana' singer for sending messages to the Olympic diver, he later clarified exactly what he meant.
"Dear Internet: @TomDaley1994 and @Samsmithworld are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh," he added.
After Black called him out on his error on Twitter, Smith tweeted: "Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn't my point."
"Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I'll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x (sic)," he added.
