Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Bihar, Sushil Modi on Saturday said that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) e-way bill should be mandatory from April 1, 2018.

"From April 1, when the new financial year of 2018 - 2019 starts, (GoM) decided to start the inter-state movement of e-way bill system. In the first phase, only the inter-state movement of goods will be mandatory required to take e-way bill and after a couple of weeks, roll-out of intra-state movement of goods through e-way bill system will start," Modi said at a press conference here.

Modi also added that 9.5 lakh taxpayers are registered on the e-way bills portal. 6.5 lakh e-way bills are generated per day.

"26 to 30 lakh e-way bills are expected to be generated when we are expected to implement e-way bills by April 1, 2018," he added.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, after the 25th GST Council meeting in January had said that the implementation of e-way bill will start from February 1, with 15 states agreeing to implement it on a trial basis.

"Certain modifications are being made to the e-way bill rules, which are to be notified nationwide for inter-state movement with effect from February 1 and for intra-state movement with effect from a date to be announced separately by each state," Jaitley had said.
