British politician and former Member of Parliament for Kensington Malcolm Rifkind has said that the European Union sanctions against Russia are working, following Moscow's ban on 89 European officials, politicians and military leaders from entering the country.

According to BBC, UK's former foreign secretary and ex-deputy PM Nick Clegg are among those barred from entering Russia.

EU sanctions were imposed on Russia following the Ukraine crisis.

Rifkind said that Russia "would not have reacted unless they felt very sore at what had happened".

Russia has not confirmed the names of those who have been banned but a Russian foreign ministry official said that the ban was the consequence of the sanctions imposed by EU.
