Even if Jayalalithaa appeals, higher courts will uphold this judgment: Subramanian Swamy

Terming the Bangalore Special Court's verdict on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as a 'perfectly correct' judgment, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said that although Jayalalithaa can appeal against the verdict in the higher courts, she will not succeed, because the higher courts will uphold this judgment.

"Let her appeal, it is allowed in the Constitution, all crooks do it, but she is not going to succeed. The court has given a perfectly correct judgment, and I think that all the higher level courts like the high court and the supreme court will uphold this judgment," Swamy said.

"In India, it is now possible for a person who does not hold any government position to be able to go to court and bring down a chief minister who has three fourths majority in the assembly," Swamy added.

Swamy further said, "I had found out that she had decided to take a monthly salary of one rupee, then I got to know that her personal assets were more than 50 crores. Therefore I wrote a complaint letter to the sessions court regarding this."

Meanwhile, BJP Tamil Nadu president Tamilisai Soundararajan said, "Because it is a Tamil Nadu chief minister who has got the punishment, as citizens of Tamil Nadu, we really feel very sad. But the law has taken its own course, and through this verdict, a clear message has been conveyed to the society, that the law is intolerant to corruption and whoever is involved in corruption, will be punished."

Earlier on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was sentenced to serve four years in jail and asked to pay a fine Rs.100 crores in connection with a disproportionate assets case by a Bangalore Special Court.
