Former United States President Bill Clinton visited a village near Lucknow to meet school students and women who have benefitted from the work of his Clinton Foundation.
Clinton visited Jabrauli village, 30 kilometres from Lucknow, and took part in a Clinton Foundation Health Initiative programme, involving children and their mothers.
Clinton told women they can empower themselves through self help groups and overcome their poverty at the event.
"He (Clinton) told us about his organisation. We don't have a roof above our head. We should organise ourselves and we are capable of doing anything. We don't need to ask for things," said a villager, Anita.
Uttar Pradesh Assembly deputy Chandra Rawat, was optimistic for the future of the village since the Clinton Foundation began work there.
"It is very good that the former US president has adopted this village. I also want that this village to develop, as he has assured us," said Rawat.
Elaborate security arrangements were made for Clinton's visit.
Earlier, Clinton also visited Jaipur. He is scheduled to travel to Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia to take stock of the work of the Clinton Foundation.
