Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo has been named the Laureus 'breakthrough of the year' award at a glitzy ceremony in Shanghai for his stellar debut season with Red Bull in 2014.
The Australian became the first sportsperson from his country to bag a prestigious Laureus award in five years.
Ricciardo won three grand prix races, including five podium finishes to end the year third in the overall drivers' championship.
Ricciardo, who is in Bahrain for Sunday's grand prix, said in a video message that he would remember 2014 for a long time and it was definitely a breakthrough in his mind as well, Stuff.co.nz reported.
The Red Bull driver added that standing on the top step of the podium a few times was icing on the cake.
