NACE International Gateway India Section (NIGIS) of NACE International, a global leader in the corrosion engineering jointly with FICCI celebrated the objective of creating awareness about the menace of corrosion and to protect the people, environment and assets from corrosion through various activities.
Corrosion, which can cause damage to everything from automobiles, drinking water systems to pipelines, bridges, factories and public buildings etc., is estimated to impact over 3 percent of GDP and is a menace adversely impacting various industry sectors including utilities, transportation, oil and gas, steel and infrastructure etc.
FICCI and NIGIS jointly with Department of C and PC, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers celebrated the International Corrosion Awareness Day on April 25.
The event witnessed active participation by industry, academia and policy makers such as Samir Kumar Biswas, Joint Secretary (Chemicals), Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Secretary, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers delivered the special address.
A global study undertaken by NACE International was released along with the presentation of Elaine Bowman, Past President NACE International, who leads the study.
The study indicates that the corrosion is impacting 4.2 percent of Indian GDP. The extent of the problem indeed is serious and will require urgent appropriate measures. This study provides a very scientific basis to facilitate formulation of appropriate strategies to control the menace of corrosion.
In the coming years as the world gets more environmentally conscious, the most important issue for engineering technology will be to maintain and expand a highly industrialized society under very restricted conditions on natural resources and energy.
In the reuse, recycling or reduction of the use of natural resources, corrosion and corrosion prevention technologies will play a direct role.
The basic purpose of this program was to generate awareness about the issue of corrosion and that corrosion can be controlled by appropriate technologies.
