At least 11 people have been killed in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in a mountainous area in north Iran, the country's state media said.

Authorities expect the number of casualties to rise in the provinces of Tehran, Alborz and Qazvin, reported the Dawn.

A Chinese national was among those killed, said the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), adding, at least 20 cars, many with people trapped inside them, had been swept away by the water.

Meanwhile, the area has been without electricity as rescue workers continue operations, despite heavy rains.
