Former Test umpire John Holder has claimed that he had been offered 10000 pounds in lieu of fixing the one-day international (ODI) match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Sharjah, UAE.
Holder was asked to fix the Sri Lankan batsmen on a partnership of 85 runs, Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The first class umpire who stood in 11 tests and 19 ODIs said that he was introduced to a man who offered who offered him 10000 pounds to change the course of the game when he was in Sharjah in 1993 for the ODI between Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan.
Holder also admitted that the man told him that his syndicates were involved in making money as the game fluctuates.
However, Holder refused the offer and said that players and umpires who get involved in match-fixing need to realize that there is nothing called easy money and corruption charges not only ruins a career but also diminishes self-respect as players and commentators come to know about the corrupt dealings.
Holder instead preferred to report the offer made to him as he said that he did not want to be remembered as a cheat.
