Badminton governing bodies are planning a new scoring system for the sport, which they would trial from August with a view to using it at the 2016 Olympics.

Matches would be best of five games rather than three under the new rules and the games would be played to 11 points instead of 12.

According to The BBC, Badminton World Federation president Poul-Erik Hoyer said that the length of games under the current format compromised the level of excitement.

However, many players are not in favour of the changes in the sport's rule, saying that they would lead to confusion.

Five-time world champion Lin Dan has voiced concern over the new system, saying that she does not like the change, adding that she does not think making changes like such is good for the game.

The new scoring system would need to be implemented across the board before May 2015 if it is to be used at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
