The government on Tuesday cancelled licences of 20,000 NGOs for violating various provisions of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
These NGOs will not be eligible to receive foreign funds. A senior Home Ministry official said of the 33,000 such registered organisations in the country, only 13,000 NGOs are legally valid.
The official said a detailed presentation was given to the Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard during a review of the Foreigners Division of the Ministry in New Delhi.
Among the 13,000 valid NGOs, around 3,000 have submitted applications for renewal while the Home Ministry received 2,000 new applications for registration under the FCRA for the first time.
