The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday stated that officials of the Uber cab company admitted to it that their agency had not followed guidelines laid down by the Delhi Transport Authority or the Delhi Police.
This admission came after a cab driver employed by Uber allegedly raped a passenger on Friday and investigations revealed that the accused in question had been arrested for a similar case in 2011.
"We asked the Uber officials why they employed such people in their agency. They replied that the accused had fulfilled all requirements asked of by their company. However, they admitted that their cabs were not equipped with GPS," DCW chief Barkha Shukla Singh told the media.
"We further asked whether the guidelines by the Transport Authority or the Delhi Police had been followed, to which they replied in the negative," she added.
Meanwhile, Uber official, though refusing to answer questions by the press, put forth a statement on the issue.
"This is a horrific event. We are very sorry for this. This is an ongoing investigation and as of now, I cannot answer any questions. We had a productive dialogue the DCW and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the victim," they said.
Friday's incident has resulted in the Delhi government banning Uber from functioning in the national capital, even as the company assured its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery.
According to reports, the cab driver had been convicted for a similar crime and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later acquitted in that case.
