Handball player commits suicide: AAP pulls up 'corrupt' Badal Govt

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday alleged that the potential players of Punjab do not get good opportunities courtesy a corrupt regime in the state and said it is extremely sad to hear of the suicide of a national-level handball player in the state at a time when girls are making the nation proud in the ongoing Rio Olympics.

"The situation in Punjab is growing so grave that a handball player commits suicide for a reason that she was not given the quota she deserved, the Rs. 3000 stipend that she was entitled to, was not given to her. On one hand, our daughters are making us proud in Rio Olympics and the same time it is a matter of shame that potential talent is getting submerged," he told ANI.

"Those having good contacts are given all benefits, but an excellent player who doesn't have a contact is not even given the deserved stipend and commits suicide," he added.

Highlighting the Punjab Government's failure, the AAP leader alleged that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has brought down Punjab from the first position to 27th.

Earlier on Saturday, a national-level handball player committed suicide after she was allegedly denied free hostel facility by the Khalsa College in Patiala.

The 20-year-old girl named Pooja, a student of BA-II, has left behind a suicide note addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The girl, whose body was found hanging in her room, has in her letter said she had to end her life as she was unable to pay her hostel fees and travel expenses.

She also urged Prime Minister Modi to ensure that "underprivileged girls like me should be provided free education facility.
