Historic results in Delhi, the beginning of clean politics in India: Kejriwal

The result of the Delhi poll is a historic one in many ways, he said

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said the people were fed up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, and therefore, they had voted for his party.

He said this historic electoral result or outcome is the beginning of clean politics not only Delhi, but also across India.

Kejriwal, who defeated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, said, "In many ways, this is the beginning of an era of clean politics. This will not be contained only in Delhi, but will spread to different parts of the country,"

Addressing his supporters, Kejriwal added, "The result of the Delhi poll is a historic one in many ways. Till now, our country's politics was a slave of the BJP, the Congress and some regional parties, who do it in the name of religion, caste, corruption and criminality. People were affected by this politics and the price and corruption. When they had no option, they decided to contest elections. In Delhi, common people have contested elections. On the one side, there was clean politics, and on other side, there was corrupt politics of other parties,"

"Today, the results show that people are fed up of the BJP and the Congress. Many first timers have defeated heavy weights of the BJP and the Congress. It is the victory of the people, and not of the AAP,"

"The people are giving a message to parties that they have to mend their ways or, the public will throw them out. We were the first to show our funds on our website and just before the elections, we had stop collecting it. This has never happened in anywhere in the world," he added.

"Democracy is the name of serving. I want to convey to the people who have won that they should work hard for their constituencies," Kejriwal said.

He also congratulated the BJP, who emerged as the single largest party in the polls, and said, "I would like to congratulate Dr. Harsh Vardhan and the BJP, who got so many seats. I have no personal rivalry with Sheila Dikshit. This fight is of issues and principles."

Latest trends in Delhi show that newcomer AAP is leading in 27 seats, while the BJP is ahead in 32 seats and the Congress in 8 seats. In Rajasthan, the BJP is ahead in 159 seats, while Congress is leading in 22 seats. In Madhya Pradesh, BJP is ahead in 159 seats, while the Congress leading in 63seats. In Chhattisgarh, BJP is ahead in 44 seats while the Congress is leading in 43 seats. The results in these four states have begun to trickle in.

The counting of votes in four states began here this morning amidst tight security and elaborate arrangements made by the Election Commission.

The votes will decide the fate of contesting candidates in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where assembly elections were held between November 11 and December 4.

Three time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has forwarded her resignation to the Lt. Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, finally accepting that her Congress Party has lost the assembly polls in the national capital.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to be in the lead in the polls and is more or less certain of returning to power in Delhi after 15 years.

However, the BJP may have to share the responsibility of governance of the Delhi with the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP).
