Home Ministry reviews progress of Bezbaruah Committee report on north east issues

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has reviewed the work of six-member committee led by M.P. Bezbaruah and has sought an interim report by July this year.

The committee comprising of retired IAS officers, student leaders and representatives from the northeastern states is looking into the concerns of the northeastern people residing across the country.

The committee is interacting with students, professionals and various persons from Northeastern states living in metro cities across the country and seek their suggestions.

Bezbaruah revealed that the committee has been looking into the possibility of enacting new laws to deal with racial discrimination.

"Our idea is to look into why there are problems being faced by the people from the Northeast community in metropolitan cities, particularly in Delhi and we informed the minister that we have so far had meetings with over 500 individuals, about 25-30 organizations in a period of 15-20 days and we will be meeting more people in next 15-20 days and we would stick to our schedule of submitting the report within the time given by the ministry," said M.P. Bezbaruah.

The committee was formed following the widespread outrage over the death of Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh in capital New Delhi.

In the last few months, following a series of attacks on northeast people in the capital, the government has been taking steps to ensure their security.

The Delhi Police has also been taking a slew of measures to sensitize the people and look after the security concerns of the northeast people in the national capital.
