Manipur keeps alive tradition of courtyard theatre form Shumang Leela

The 42nd edition of All Manipur Shumang Leela Festival was held recently under the aegis of Manipur State Kala Akademi at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound in Imphal.

The 15-day long festival not only provides the groups an opportunity to showcase their new productions but also acts as a platform to analyze the trends of this art form.

"Every year Manipur State Kala Academy organises Shumang Leela to promote the indigenous art form of Shumang leela. We have been organizing it since 1972. Our main aim is to promote and preserve Shumang Leela," said Iboyima Khuman, a male artist.

Even after the introduction of regular theatre, the Shumang Leela tradition continued gaining its ground and the number of organized parties is increasing day by day. The art gives employment to many young talents.

Manipur Governor V K Duggal distributed prizes to best artists in presence of Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh.

Shumang Leela is of two types - Nupa Shumang leela, performed only by male artistes, and Nupi Shumang leela, performed only by female artistes.

"Now a days, people don't give much interest to Nupi Leela (female play) so I want to promote it. I want the audience to watch Nupi Leela," said Rosy Devi, a female artist.

Programme Officer at Manipur State Kala Academy, Bhubon Singh, said, "Every year I teach Shumang Leela to female artists. I want to promote them. I always give advice so that artists can improve their skills."

Apart from its theatrical significance, Shumang Leela also plays an important role in raising social issues.
