A new video from the American Academy of Dermatology is now offering advice on how to care for your nails to keep them looking their best.

Dermatologist Phoebe Rich, MD, FAAD, clinical adjunct professor of dermatology at Oregon Health Science University, Portland, shared some tips to keep the nail healthy:

She said that nails can be kept healthy by filing with an emery board and not using them as a tool for opening pop cans.

Another method to keep the nails healthy was by trimming toenails regularly and keeping them short.

Rich said that by wearing shoes that fit properly the nails can be kept in good health.

Wearing flip flops at the pool and in public showers reduces the risk of

infections caused by a fungus that can get in your toenails.
