A large number of school students and NCC cadets took part in a 'Know Your Army' rally held here.

The event was jointly organised by the Army and Assam Rifles. It was touted as a special drive to attract locals to join the armed forces.

The organisers said that the participation of so many youth in the rally was a positive sign that the youth iof the state do not support militants who have repeatedly claimed that they are fighting for tribal rights and development.

On the eve of India's 68th Independence Day, aprt from a display of arms, ammunition and other equipment, troopers also gave a demonstration.

"Till now, I have been using these arms in my video game, but now, I have got the feeling of using real arms and so I am motivated to join the army and serve the motherland," said Aditya, a sixth standard student.

Interestingly, girls out numbered boys, and they suggested that they should also be allowed to handle arms to give themselves a confidence and motivational boost.

Susmita Kar, an NCC cadet, said, "This is a great opportunity for the youth to know what the army is about. It will not only motivate them, but also convince their parents about the benefits of joining the Indian army."

Another student, Puja Debnath, said: "I really enjoyed taking the guns in my hand and would like to join the army to serve my nation."

A small musical drill was also arranged as entertainment for the students.
