India celebrated its 67th Independence Day on Thursday with great fervour as it geared up to face economic, social challenges and also expressed joy over the achievements it accomplished over the years.
India achieved its independence from the colonial British rule on August 15, 1947, ending more than 200 years of rule.
The British Empire divided India into the Dominions of India and Pakistan, a decision that was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties.
In Amritsar, Indian security personnel exchanged sweets with the Pakistani Rangers and danced to patriotic tunes.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of India's paramilitary, Border Security Force (BSF), Amritsar sector, M. F. Farooqui said that the soldiers celebrated the day with enthusiasm in the spirit of the historical day.
Patna also celebrated the event, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reviewing a parade by security personnel.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan also inspected the parade by the security personnel after unfurling the national flag.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also hoisted the national flag and inspected the parade, while helicopters showered flowers on the crowd below.
