Begum Hazarat Mahal, who had rebelled against the British colonial rule in 1857, was remembered on her 137th death anniversary recently.
In Kathmandu, India's Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae laid a wreath at Begum Hazrat Mahal's tomb in the Jame Masjid and recalled her contribution to India's freedom struggle
He said, "Begum Hazrat Mahal was India's freedom fighter. She fought the country's first war of independence. Since childhood we have learnt about her contribution. When I get to know about her tomb in Kathmandu, it is our duty to make out next generation aware about her great contribution. Every year on April 7, we come and pay our respect to the great legend."
Hazrat Mhal was the Begum of Awadh and the first wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and died on April 7, 1879 in Nepal.
Ambassador Rae offered to provide necessary assistance to protect and preserve the tomb of Begum Hazrat Mahal which is located in the heart of Kathmandu.
