To completely eliminate circulation of fake passports a new model of passport has been launched, which along with the actual image of the holder will also contain his ghost image.

The external affairs ministry has launched this new passport in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore's chief passport officer S. Sasikumar said the law will not create any confusion.

"So whenever we issue a new system it is being communicated to all the concerned departments like immigration, to all different ports for complaints. So definitely it will not create any confusions and it is not necessary for the applicant to immediately shift over from the old to the new system. Whenever the passport's period is over they can come for a re-issue and the new passport can be issued to the applicant," said Sasikumar.

This step has been taken to completely eliminate the circulation of fake passports, as these images are difficult to forge.

Other changes made in the security features are, that the personal details of the applicant have been shifted from inner cover page to page two and other particulars have been shifted from first page, to page number thirty-five.

The signature and seal of the passport issuing authority, which were earlier on page one, will be on the front cover, and there will also be double lamination.
