The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has urged Japan to expedite the troubled construction of Tokyo's Olympic stadium by January 2020.
IOC Vice-President John Coates said that he had asked Olympics Minister Toshiaki Endo to handover the stadium to organising committee for ceremonies and rehearsals by January 2020, the Guardian reports.
Endo told Coates that this might be difficult to do, as the original deadline of April 2020 for completion of Tokyo's new Olympic stadium was difficult to meet.
Endo said that he could only ask the contractors to finish the construction as quickly as possible.
Earlier this month, Japan approved guidelines for its new Olympic stadium, vowing to build an athlete-friendly stadium as cheaply as possible.
