Irani targets Gandhi family, asks Priyanka 'to do her homework'

Says there is an off campus of IIIT, Allahabad, in Amethi

Taking potshots at Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for asking her to focus on improving the state of education in Amethi, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday alleged that the Gandhi family had done nothing in this political bastion that they have ruled for 60 years.

"I am of the opinion that Mrs. (Priyanka Gandhi) Vadra has not done her homework. There is an off campus of IIIT, Allahabad, in Amethi," Irani said while addressing the media here.

"What is astounding is that why the Gandhi family has ruled that bastion for 60 years? They have done absolutely nothing, and now, a winning candidate is asking a losing candidate to develop his constituency that his family has been reining for over 60 years," Irani added.

Priyanka, who is presently on a two-day visit to Rae Bareli and Amethi, had earlier accused Irani of not addressing issues related to the youth of Amethi.

"The minister is answerable as to why there is still no IIIT in Amethi," Priyanka told the media in Amethi.

"Since she (Smriti Irani) is trying to do something for Amethi, it will be good if she does something about the IIIT. Since she's the education minister she should try to improve the state of education," she added.

Irani had unsuccessfully contested against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi from the Amethi parliamentary constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
