In what may come as an embarrassment for the Centre which has been defending External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over her humanitarian aid to former IPL boss Lalit Modi, former Home Secretary and BJP MP RK Singh on Tuesday said that it is absolutely wrong to help an absconder.

"A Police Commissioner meeting an absconder is not correct. Lalit Modi should be brought back, he should face a trial. Meeting an absconder or helping him is absolutely wrong," said Singh.

After Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasandhara Raje, Maharashtra Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria had come under criticism for meeting Lalit Modi in London.

In a statement issued by the office of the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Maria had said that he was approached by an advocate representing Lalit Modi who stated that the former IPL boss wanted to meet him.

Maria further said that Lalit Modi repeatedly kept requesting for Mumbai Police's intervention against the underworld.
