The United States winger Landon Donovan, who was left off the national team squad in late May, reportedly took his World Cup snub really hard and briefly hoped that the team would not do well without him.
Donovan said that while watching the U.S. play against Azerbaijan a part of him was honestly thinking that the game does not go very well.
Donovan said that he thought in his heart of hearts that if the U.S. get a 1-0 win and the team does not perform well, that would feel good, Us Magazine reported.
The low point for Donovan came after the Los Angeles Galaxy star and all the all-time leading scorer in U.S. soccer, was cut from the 2014 World Cup squad by national coach Juergen Klinsmann.
Donovan, who was outraged and shocked by the move, said that he respected the decision, adding that he just feels in his heart that he deserves to be there and that is the pill that is the hardest to swallow.
Donovan revealed that he struggled to overcome his bitterness and was alternately sad, angry, upset and disappointed and said that as athletes, they all have egos, they all think they can help and when one is not given that chance it is hard to watch.
