Lehmann hopes 'sprinkling' of short rests will refresh ' weary' Oz Test stars for England ODIs

Australian coach Darren Lehmann has said that he is hoping a sprinkling of short rests for Australia's weary Test cricketers, starting with pace sensation Mitchell Johnson, will be enough to sufficiently refresh them for the upcoming one-dayers against England.

Cricket Australia (CA), which rested captain Michael Clarke, David Warner and then-wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for the first two matches of the home one-day series against Sri Lanka last year, has confirmed Johnson will remain at home in Perth and will not join the squad until it convenes in Brisbane for next week's one-dayer at the Gabba.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Lehmann, who joined the selection panel seven months ago, said that in order to put the best side out for the ODIs, it is necessary to give the weary players few short breaks given that they have had a hectic five-Test series, especially Johnson.

Lehmann defended the merits of resting Ashes player-of-the-series Johnson, followed by some of his Test teammates, throughout the five-match series against England, adding that the selectors would 'sum up as they go' about resting players, particularly for in-form veteran wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

However, Lehmann insisted that they do not want to go down the previous path where they have rested 'clumps' of players, adding that the selectors would be picking and choosing wherever they can do it in order to put a good squad together ahead of the 2015 World Cup.
