Liverpool planning to refurbish Anfield stadium to accommodate 60,000 fans

Liverpool has reportedly revealed that the club is planning to refurbish their Anfield stadium and increase the capacity to just short of 60,000 fans in an effort to generate the matchday revenues of their Premier League rivals.

Liverpool, which is close to its first English title since 1990, reportedly released images of the proposed expansion of the Main Stand to increase the capacity of Anfield by 8,500 seats to 54,000.

According to Sport24, the club has also revealed their outlined proposal to upgrade their Anfield Road end by 4,800 seats.

Liverpool is reportedly hopeful of completing the first phase of development in time for the 2016-17 season, while there is no timescale on the second stage of the project.

With Manchester United being able to accommodate 75,000 fans at Old Trafford and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium having around 60,000 seats, Liverpool reportedly lag far behind their two main rivals in terms of matchday revenue.

Liverpool's managing director Ian Ayre said that as part of their proposed stadium redevelopment project, they have unveiled the details of their ambitious plans for expanding their stadium's Main Stand and Anfield Road stand.

Ayre said that in order to move forward with their expansion plans they need to have certainty that they can navigate the complex planning process and secure the support of the community, local home owners, businesses and other key stakeholders, the report added.
