Met predicts heavy showers in north, west India (Update)

The Meteorological Department on Saturday predicted that heavy rainfall would continue in north and western parts of the country in the coming week.

The national capital was hit by a sudden dust storm following which heavy showers brought long awaited respite to the city, which was simmering under high temperatures.

Mercury levels fell to 26 degrees Celsius at around 6 p.m. from the earlier 40 degrees Celsius and more recorded in the past week. The capital recorded 4.8 mm rains.

The Met department officials said the storm in Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) was recorded at a speed of 84 kilometre an hour.

"There is high humidity in the atmosphere now. In the next two-three days, there will be a strong cloud cover and there is a high probability of rain in north and west India. The temperature has dropped considerably and in the coming days too, the temperature is expected to remain less than 40 degrees Celsius. There will be intermittent showers along with a cloud cover," said Met Department director B.P. Yadav.

Meanwhile, the residents in Nagpur were seen out on the streets as many waded through waterlogged streets.

The rains were accompanied with strong winds.

"The temperatures here had reached 47 degrees centigrade and since it rained the whole day today, the temperature has really come down. We are feeling nice and relieved," said Ashwin, a local resident here.
