Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said his mission is to build 'New India' which is free from politics of communalism, corruption, and caste.
The Prime Minister was attending the flagging off event of the 'Run for New India Marathon'.
"No country is made by leaders or governments. It is the strength of the people that builds a nation. We have to build a New India, which is free from politics of caste, communalism, and corruption. We want to create an India where every citizen is empowered so when the people decide to achieve something, no force can stop them," he asserted.
Prime Minister Modi further said Surat is blessed with a remarkable determination that believes in harmony.
"I urge the citizens of Surat to actively take part in this year's Yoga Day in June and the 'Run for Unity' in October. It is the best tribute to the great women and men who gave their lives for India's freedom. Such marathons augur well for the health of people. I appeal to people to embrace sports as it brings good health and furthers a spirit of teamwork," he added.
A huge crowd thronged the streets to get a glimpse of the lighting and decorations across the city for the marathon.
This marathon is being conducted to highlight the union government's initiatives for building of New India.
The marathon is being held in four categories, - a full marathon of 42.2 km, half marathon which will cover 21.1 km and 10 km and 5 km.
