Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday acknowledged that there has been delay in Mumbai's Monorail project, and said it will be completed after getting all the safety certifications.

"The project has to be completed in time. It should be completed when all the safety certifications are given. There will be no compromise with safety whatsoever," Chavan told media here today.

On being asked whether the project was being inaugurated keeping in mind the upcoming general election, Chavan said, "We were rushing to inaugurate this even before the BMC elections. It is a fact that the project has been delayed. But it has nothing to do with any election deadline."

Chavan also said that one of the projects has been completed now and the other might not be completed till the elections.

Earlier today, Chavan had inaugurated a monorail service in Mumbai.

The chief minister flagged off the first monorail at Wadala Monorail Station. Afterwards, he alongwith other minister rode in it till the last station.

Chavan inaugurated the 8.93 km long part between Wadala and Chembur in Mumbai's eastern side. The monorail will be linked to major local train stations.

The coaches of the monorail are air conditioned and can accommodate 560 passengers at a time.
