Muniyappa tells Govt.: Improve Railways first, bullet trains can come later

In the wake of the twin train accidents in Madhya Pradesh, Congress member and former Minister of State for Railways, K.H. Muniyappa, has asserted that the government should first focus on improving the existing railway network and then compete with China on procuring high-speed bullet trains.

While terming the accident 'sad,' Muniyappa said, "Of course, we have to compete with China but first railway tracks should be corrected and the speed should be pushed up to 160".

He also said that the railway department should be 'vigilant' during rainy season and urged ministers 'to see and visit the place, launch a proper inquiry and take action against those responsible'.

At least 28 people have died after two passenger trains, Kamayani Express and Janata Express, derailed within minutes of each other while crossing flooded tracks in Madhya Pradesh last night.

Several NDRF teams have been rushed to the site of the derailment to carry out relief and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have expressed condolences over the mishap and assured help to those affected by the tragedy.
