Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on Tuesday said that it is a matter of concern for the entire nation that the Prime Minister, instead of running the nation is more focused on campaigning for State Assembly elections.

"A Prime Minister has the responsibility of running the entire nation; instead of that his focus is more on campaigning for State Assembly elections, which is a matter of concern for the nation. Maybe he thinks that if the BJP does not win the assembly elections of Haryana and Maharashtra then his political grip in Delhi will weaken," Anwar told ANI.

When asked to comment on Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray's statement in which he equated the rigorous campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his central ministers in Maharashtra with the army of seventeenth century Bijapur general Afzal Khan, Anwar said, "To an extent what they are saying is right. The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi is campaigning in Maharashtra leaving all the other tasks aside suggests that there is some motive behind it."

Earlier on Monday, the Sena chief had alleged that BJP's whole intention is to break Maharashtra into pieces in the name of bringing progress and development. He had also said that the ongoing poll campaign in Maharashtra by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet are like the army of Afzal Khan trying to conquer the state.

The elections for 288 members Maharashtra Assembly is scheduled to be held on October 15.
