Stressing on the need to change the society's mindset towards women, Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar on Wednesday insisted that there is no need to legislate any separate laws as there are sufficient laws in the judiciary which can safeguard women.
"There are sufficient laws and rules for woman to protect them. They don't need more laws. However, there is a need is to change the mindset of society towards women," Justice Khehar said while addressing a seminar on International Women's Day.
He said the society must be gender-sensitised and the process must be started at the earliest.
"Birth of a son is celebrated in the family, but birth of a daughter is not seen as jubilant. Even when husband and wife go for shopping, men spend money as he chooses, but wife spent what the husband allows her," Khehar said.
Highlighting that the incidents of rape are majorly reported in the lower strata of the society, Khehar said, "It is because they don't have electricity connection, water and even the land on which they have been residing, it doesn't belong to them."
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the indomitable spirit, determination and dedication of women power.
"Saluting the indomitable spirit, determination and dedication of Nari Shakti on International Women's Day. GoI's various initiatives seek to facilitate economic empowerment, self-reliance & social equality as far as Nari Shakti is concerned (sic)," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
