The Nigerian Army on Monday confirmed that its troops had rescued 178 people from the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in the country's northern Borno state.

In a statement released over the weekend, and reported by the BBC, the Nigerian Army said that 101 of the 178 rescued were children and 67 were women.

The military also confirmed that they had captured a Boko Haram commander and cleared several camps run by the terrorist group.

In 2014, the Boko Haram claimed that it had killed about 5,500 civilians in Nigeria.

Over 200 Chibok high school girls are still reported as missing more than a year after they were kidnapped.

Last October, the government said it had secured an agreement for a ceasefire and the release of the girls taken from Chibok, but Boko Haram subsequently denied this.
