Omar Abdullah appeals PM Modi for additional flights between Jammu and Srinagar

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to arrange for additional flights between Srinagar and Jammu for passengers who were left stranded due to heavy rainfall in the state.

"Request Govt Of India @PMOIndia @narendramodi to operate some additional flights between Jammu and Srinagar tomorrow for people stuck," he tweeted.

"The highway is closed and flights are totally sold out. With this flood like situation people need/want to fly home but can't. @PMOIndia," he added.

The valley has been witnessing heavy rainfall since yesterday, leading to sudden surge in water level of rivers, streams and rivulets, causing panic among the residents about possibility of fresh floods.

Earlier, the NC leader also asked Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to reassure the people about the factual position and dismiss rumours of fresh floods in the valley.

"Now is the time for the CM to use Radio Kashmir and FM to address people to reassure them of the factual position and dispel rumours," he further tweeted.

According to reports, residential houses were damaged due to a landslide caused by rain in Chontinar village of Budgam district.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department director B.P. Yadav said that the state would witness heavy rainfall in the next six days, adding that the hilly regions in north India would be under a wet spell next week as well.

"There will be rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir for the next six days. Heavy rainfall may also occur tomorrow. There will be a wet spell for hilly regions next week. We have already given warnings through our weather forecast department," he said in New Delhi.
